Marion County Man Charged with Exploitation of 94 Year Old Woman

Marion County Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested Michael Charles Fluharty of Lake Butler and charged him with one count of exploitation of an elderly person. Fluharty is 58 years-old. According to the arrest affidavit, the victim is 94 years old and has lost $450,000 due to Fluharty’s actions.

Marion County Sheriff’s Office Detective Janeen Henley-Freeman said Fluharty did lawn care for the victim. That was back in 2008 and over the years Fluharty reportedly had the victim write checks – for increasing amounts and make loans to Fluharty. “The defendant subsequently began taking the victim’s money through checks, money transfers, debit card transactions and cash,” Det. Henley-Freeman said.
 
According to the arrest affidavit, Fluharty further coerced the victim into giving him power of attorney, changing the victim’s will to leave Fluharty as sole executor and beneficiary.
 
The arrest took place Thursday, July 7, 2011. Right now, Fluharty is in the Marion County Jail with an expected bond amount of $125,000.
