Adding omega-3 fatty acids did not improve a combination of nutritional supplements commonly recommended for treating age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a major cause of vision loss among older Americans, according to a study from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The plant-derived antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin also had no overall effect on AMD when added to the combination; however, they were safer than the related antioxidant beta-carotene, according to the study published online today in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Michael Todd Cain faces three criminal charges and is accused of sexual assault by a custodian, sexual assault on a victim under 18 and older than 12 years old. Cain, age 42, of Summerfield, is currently in the Marion County Jail.

Jonathan David Monteith, 25, of Ocala has been charged with having sex with a juvenile. Detectives interviewed the victim who said the sexual contact happened inside Monteith’s home. The juvenile told detectives another juvenile, along with Monteith, were smoking marijuana and listening to music.

Ashley Nicole Hedrick, 19, of Ocala has been charged with having sex with a juvenile. Detectives interviewed the victim after Hedrick brought the victim to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. The juvenile gave detectives details concerning the sexual contact.

John Heatherly, 53, of Summerfield was arrested after he made a threat to blow up the McDonald’s Restaurant at 17890 South Highway 441, Summerfield on Monday.

Lamar Lee Maddox, 39, of Umatilla is in jail in Pinellas County. Maddox was arrested in the St. Petersburg area by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office. That arrest came on the morning of Monday, May 6, 2013. Maddox is charged with fatally shooting Brandon Simmons at 17025 SE 249th Terrace, Umatilla, on Saturday, May 4, 2013.

Marion County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that occurred at 17025 SE 249 Terrance in Umatilla, FL. A verbal altercation started between Brandon Wayne Simmons and Lamar Lee Maddox, when Maddox pulled out an unknown caliber handgun and shot Simmons several times.

Lake County Sheriff’s detectives have arrested a Groveland woman for filing a false report that she was abducted and sexually assaulted in March.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the murder of an unidentified female whose body was discovered in a wooded area near S.R. 44 and Interstate 75 in Wildwood. Sheriff’s Detectives have released a composite of the murder victim prepared at the University of South Florida where the victim’s remains are being examined.

Brandon Jordan Stevens, 23, is currently in the Marion County Jail on credit card fraud charges. Stevens will now face an additional charge of admission of a false report to law enforcement authorities.

Suicide deaths have surpassed deaths from motor vehicle crashes in recent years in the United States. In 2010 there were 33,687 deaths from motor vehicle crashes and 38,364 suicides. Suicide rates among middle-aged Americans have risen substantially since 1999, according to a report in today’s CDC journal, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

A Savannah man wanted for Murder by the Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police Department was arrested in Ocala, Florida by the United States Marshals Service Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force on May 1, 2013.

The major development involved the furloughs of FAA employees.  To make a long story short, the sequestration cuts which have been imposed across the government have been implemented by the Obama administration in a way that will make the pain the most severe and the most obvious.  One of the earliest signs of that was when the administration announced that they were cancelling White House tours indefinitely.  They didn’t have to do that.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY is being redefined in America, or at least many would like it to be. Our secular establishment wants to reduce the autonomy of religious institutions and limit the influence of faith in the public square. The reason is not hard to grasp. In America, “religion” largely means Christianity, and today our secular culture views orthodox Christian churches as troublesome, retrograde, and reactionary forces. They’re seen as anti-science, anti-gay, and anti-women—which is to say anti-progress as the Left defines progress. Not surprisingly, then, the Left believes society will be best served if Christians are limited in their influence on public life.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Apprehension Unit arrested Ashleah Hyder, 25, and Kyle Robert Reese, 51. The unit took action after receiving a request from the Leesburg Police Department to locate the suspects.
