The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating several burglaries in the areas of Leesburg, Fruitland Park and Lady Lake. In the past several weeks approximately 60 burglaries have been reported from Lady Lake through the Bassville Park area of Leesburg. Detectives believe several different groups are committing the crimes and some groups may be connected.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating several burglaries in the areas of Leesburg, Fruitland Park and Lady Lake. In the past several weeks approximately 60 burglaries have been reported from Lady Lake through the Bassville Park area of Leesburg. Detectives believe several different groups are committing the crimes and some groups may be connected. Burglaries have been reported to have occurred during daytime hours and involved forced entry into homes.

Lake County sheriff’s narcotics detectives obtained information that a man wanted on a Lake County warrant for aggravated assault was hiding out in Dona Vista and was involved in cooking meth. The wanted subject, Rodney Worthey, was apparently hiding in a residence on New York Avenue in Dona Vista.

On Thursday, May 9, Lake County sheriff’s narcotics detectives obtained information that a man wanted on a Lake County warrant for aggravated assault was hiding out in Dona Vista and was involved in cooking meth. The wanted subject, Rodney Worthey, was apparently hiding in a residence on New York Avenue in Dona Vista.

Narcotics detectives and members from the sheriff’s warrants unit conducted surveillance on the home, located at 37321 New York Avenue, and were able to observe Worthey at the residence.

The event, hosted by the Lake Eustis Chamber of Commerce, will take place Saturday, May 18 at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 2101 County Road 452, Eustis. Admission is $5 and children 12 and younger will have free admission.

On March 30, Amelia De-La-Cruz reported to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office that she was abducted from the Los Compadres Meat Market at 712 East Myers Boulevard in Mascotte. She stated that her ex-boyfriend took her against her will from that location and took her to a wooded area off of the Van Fleet Trail in Groveland where he sexually assaulted her.

The 17th Annual Leesburg Bikefest, the world’s largest three-day motorcycle rally and music event, will take place the weekend of April 26 to 28. About 300,000 bikers and enthusiasts are expected to arrive in Leesburg via motorcycle, car and bus to enjoy more than 70 concerts, 250 vendors, and multiple special events and shows at 12 entertainment venues. All events are free.

Detectives with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office recently wrapped up an undercover sting that was part of a state-wide initiative of the Member Agencies of the Florida Sheriff’s Association to crack down on underage drinking, tobacco, and synthetic drug use. The objective of the operation, dubbed Operation: Dry Spring, was to identify and cite those selling alcohol, tobacco, and synthetic drugs to underage youth.

On April 9, 2013, Sheriff's Narcotics Detectives located and dismantled a methamphetamine lab at the Oakwood Motel located at 2110 N. Citrus Blvd. in Leesburg. Information was received that there was possibly an active lab at the motel and detectives responded to investigate.

A search warrant was obtained and and during the search Mr. Ben Rhodes, age 35, was arrested. Mr. Rhodes was charged with Manufacturing of Methamphetamine, Trafficking in Methamphetamine, Possession of Paraphernalia and rental of structure for manufacturing of controlled substance.

According to Workforce Central Florida, a state agency, the unemployment rate in Lake County dropped from 8.3 percent in January 2013 to 7.6 percent in February. The county’s unemployment rate has dropped 2.2 percent since February 2012, when it was 9.7 percent.

Veach, most recently a director for a state agency, started this week as the deputy county manager. Robert Chandler has been promoted to the position of director of the Lake County Economic Development & Tourism Department, from his prior role as coordinator with the same department.

The 2nd Annual Central Florida Landscape & Garden Fair will take place the weekend of April 20 and 21 at the Lake County Agricultural Center’s Discovery Gardens, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares. The Lake County Public Resources Department and UF/IFAS Master Gardener volunteers will host youth activities in the Children’s Garden. The activities are free, and include access to the Butterfly House and the Five Senses Garden, a seed activity, a self-guided maze adventure and more.
