According to preliminary statistics released today by the FBI, 47 law enforcement officers were feloniously killed in the line of duty in 2012. The total number of officers killed is 25 fewer than the 72 officers who died in 2011. By region, 22 officers were killed as a result of criminal acts that occurred in the South, eight officers in the West, six officers in the Northeast, five officers died due to incidents in the Midwest, and six officers were killed in the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

The Dirty Dozen listing, compiled by the IRS each year, lists a variety of common scams taxpayers can encounter at any point during the year. But many of these schemes peak during filing season as people prepare their tax returns.

Identity theft is once more the top complaint received by the Federal Trade Commission, which has released its 2012 annual report of complaints. 2012 marks the first year in which the FTC received more than 2 million complaints overall, and 369,132, or 18 percent, were related to identity theft. Of those, more than 43 percent related to tax- or wage-related fraud.

Three active-duty Marines are dead after a shooting incident that began late last night at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va.

WASHINGTON, March 22, 2013 – Three active-duty Marines are dead after a shooting incident that began late last night at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va.

One of the dead was the shooter, who died of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials said.

The names of the dead are being withheld, pending notification of their families.

Seven service members were killed and several others were injured last night when an incident occurred during a training exercise at Hawthorne Army Depot, Nev.

Statistics released today in the FBI’s Preliminary Semiannual Uniform Crime Report indicate that the number of violent crimes reported in the first six months of 2012 increased 1.9 percent when compared with figures from the first six months of 2011. The number of property crimes increased 1.5 percent for the same time frame.

U.S. employers added an anemic 155,000 jobs in December and the November rate was revised upwards to 7.8% from 7.7%. The President continues to fail on his promise to be the "Jobs President." Heading into his second term there is no sign that conditions will get any better as the President plays partisan politics with taxes and the economy.

The Labor Department says the unemployment rate stayed at 7.8 percent last month making it four months in a row of a stagnant economy.
